Frequently Asked Questions
-
Our "village" is designed for children ages 2.5 to 6 (sometimes up to 8 for siblings). We occasionally welcome children slightly outside this range if it balances the needs and dynamics of the current group.
-
We maintain an intimate group of 7–9 children with 2 teachers. This low ratio ensures we can connect deeply with every child, every single day.
-
In California, only schools with permanent buildings are eligible for licensure; therefore, outdoor programs are license-exempt. However, we strictly follow all state health and safety guidelines.
The Basics
Readiness & Philosophy
-
Your child is likely ready to be the "Captain of their adventure" if they:
Can walk short distances independently without being carried.
Are beginning to explore independence (carrying their own backpack, opening their lunch).
Can stay with the group and stop when an adult asks.
Are prepared and excited to be outside, rain or shine!
-
Children learn best from one another. Older children build empathy and leadership by mentoring, while younger children are inspired by more sophisticated language and play. It creates a natural, supportive community.
-
We view reasonable risk as a teacher. By balancing on logs and climbing hills, children develop judgment, persistence, and confidence. We inspect every area first to ensure the environment is safe for these vital challenges.
-
Absolutely. We explore the same core concepts as traditional programs through a play-based lens. We are highly experienced in the SF Kindergarten process and provide guidance and recommendations for our graduates.
-
We offer a consistent 8:30 am - 4 pm, M–F program for our Daily School. And 9 - 3 pm for Camp Days (with offer before and aftercare, please view ACTIVITY HERO for more details). We believe a steady routine helps children feel secure, build deeper friendships, and fully engage in long-term forest projects.
-
No. But it is preferred. We work with each family and support the child wherever they are in this process. We have access to on-site restrooms and also utilize a portable potty for when we are deeper in the groves.
-
We love the fog and the rain! Through movement and proper layers, children learn to regulate their body temperature. We only cancel or move indoors for extreme weather or an AQI of 100+.
-
Yes. Since we hike daily, children need non-slip boots, a comfortable backpack, and quality rain gear. You can find our full Field Kit Guide here.

Community & Communication
-
We value parents as partners! We invite families to join us for special events, hikes, and projects. If you have a special skill or talent you’d like to share, we’d love to hear it.
-
We are not affiliated with the department, but we are proud "residents" of the park. We teach the children to be stewards of the land, practicing a waste-free, "leave no trace" philosophy.
